It’s hard to believe, but it’s time for our 7th annual gift guide. The gifts you see below were carefully selected by the VIA team and represent the latest and greatest in the world of design and tech. So if you’re at a loss of what to get for your nerdy friends or loved ones, this is a good place to start.
Cuphead – “Don’t Deal with the Devil” Video Game
Cuphead’s amazingly gorgeous 1930’s style animation, ragtime music, and infuriatingly difficult run and gun play gives me all the feels I got back in the 80’s playing games like Dragon’s Lair and Super Mario Brothers.
Takashi Murakami Limited Edition Lithographs
I was honored to be able to visit his exhibition in Chicago this year and was drawn further into Murakami’s world of surrealism, buddhist mythology and lore. It was a mind blowing experience. Also, it’s usually very difficult to find his prints for less than $1000. The MCA Chicago store has a bunch right now and I doubt they last much longer, but don’t worry, I’ve already purchased my favorite of the bunch.
Monograph by Chris Ware
We should all live inside a Chris Ware designed world.
Artist Project Monograph
When I need inspiration to leave my house even though the world was not designed by Chris Ware.
Ed Ruscha: Extremes and In-betweens
I’ve been interested in Ed Ruscha’s work for some time now and I’m always interested in adding to my book collection, so this gift ticks off a couple boxes. If this doesn’t end up under the tree I might just treat myself to it.
Wrensilva Loft Stereo Console
Wonderful classic audio styling with modern touches like wifi connectivity.
I mean who wouldn’t want a submarine for Christmas.
Mini Forecast Barometer
This is a cool idea if it actually works well. Might just be a nice office decoration though.
Dyson AM10 Humidifier and Fan
My skin becomes very dry in the winter and I feel like this Brancusian humidifier will retain my questionably visible dew during periods of frigid temperatures.
Moonlight Neck Repair by Make Beauty
Hate to say it but, tech-neck is real. Am I super concerned about aging? No. But I love prevention and products. However, I am suddenly paranoid about the light exposure I am enduring from staring at a computer all day…
They have this awesome little quiz you can take to suggest vitamins for you while also providing you with a lot of information on each vitamin in your pack. Then the vitamins arrive in this adorable artist-designed package with your name on them. Each daily pouch is like a fortune cookie. Design swoon worthy for sure.
Sephora Hand Masks
Once a girl that I babysit told me that my hands felt like sandpaper. The PTSD from that situation has caused me to stock up on these hand masks. Don’t ask – just buy them.
Anything from the Colossal Shop
If you’re looking for an affordable gift for your designy friend, the Colossal Shop has been a treasure trove of interesting stuff lately. If you don’t already know about Colossal, we may not be able to be friends.
Gravity Weighted Blanket
For when I am watching movies instead of leaving the house because the world was not designed by Chris Ware.
To be entirely honest I’d rather someone buy me a trip to NYC to just spend some time in the MoMA store, but I’ll settle on this pretty vase to enjoy from the comfort of home.
Eye Glasses Holder
Sure, it’s easy for the glasses dependent to set their glasses down on their nightstand before going to sleep. But why not jazz up the boring routine with a goofy glasses stand?
Automatic Sandscript Drawing Machine
This isn’t really techy, and I’m not sure why this interests me so much – I’d probably be over it within the first week – but its like the zen version of an etch a sketch.
Make sure Fido gets fed whether it’s a late night at the office or if happy hour often becomes happy hours. The SmartFeeder is an automatic pet feeder that precisely measures portions based on your pet’s age, weight, and activity level. The feeder can be controlled remotely from your smartphone and also integrates with the Nest Cam and Amazon Alexa.
Adopt a Pet!
Not sure what to get your loved one this year? How about a puppy? Seriously, get them a puppy. They need a puppy. Everyone needs a puppy.
DJ Cat Scratching Pad
This is a great jumping off point to make your cat insta-famous.
Fujifilm X-T20 24.3MP Mirrorless Digital Camera with XF 18-55mm F2.8-4 R LM OIS Lens, UHD 4K Video Recording at 30fps, Built-In Wi-Fi, Silver
I’m geeking out on these “new” “mirrorless cameras. Way less bulky and fragile than traditional SLRs, but also with 4k video recording. The Wirecutter is a good place to find the right one for your budget, but I’m looking at the Fuji X-T20.
Filmstruck Streaming Service
I dislike leaving my house most days because the world was not designed by Chris Ware.
HP Sprocket Portable Photo Printer
Easily turn your favorite social media images into stickers with this portable Bluetooth printer!
RAMS: A documentary film by Gary Hustwit
Okay so this won’t be available until Spring 2018, but I’ve been waiting for this for over a year already so what’s a few more months? I’m a huuuuge fan of Huswit’s previous films so I have high hopes for his documentary on the iconic Dieter Rams. Ideally someone loves me enough to buy me a private screening via the kickstarter campaign, but I’d settle for a simple digital copy and still be thrilled.
Tripod Stand and Travel Case
I like the idea of taking this on a camping trips and such, as long as there’s something to use for a screen.
TP-Link AC1750 Wi-Fi Range Extender
This, because sometimes our wifi range isn’t as strong on the opposite side of the house, or doesn’t reach as far out on our lot as I’d like. I like streaming music while I do yard work :)
Ideum Drafting Table
This is pretty cool as well but looks like it’s operating system includes drafting and museum interactive displays. Perhaps we could open a museum?
Optoma EH319UST 1080p 3D DLP Ultra Short Throw Projector
This would be a welcome gift for transferring large murals in small spaces.
I fidget, you fidget, we all fidget. Especially creatives, or anyone working under high pressure/staring at a computer screen a lot of the time (It’s not just me, right?) Whether tapping your foot, clicking a pen, or chewing gum. Take it to the next level. Fidget like a pro.
Slate 2.0 Mobile Desk
For those that don’t like to stay in one place. Like me.
