While I think that tablets are definitely the “next big thing” in gadgetry, and I plan on purchasing some type of tablet in the near future, I will not be purchasing an iPad. Apple has completely revolutionized the tech world with the iPod and the iPhone, but the iPad falls short. Here’s why:

1. No Flash
Under most circumstances I would say that Flash is completely useless in the Web 2.0 world. Advances in other programming technologies have relegated Flash to specialized applications and animation. But with the iPad being primarily a media consumption device, Flash video is still the number one used format on the web. I would be pretty upset if I’m browsing my Cook’s Illustrated online membership and couldn’t view the videos.
2. Better Alternatives
While the iPhone operating system is a wonder of modern technology, tablets will be usable because of the applications available to them. There are already a plethora of alternatives to the iPad, and there are plenty more on the way. The Android OS has Apple beat hands down in this department.
3. No USB, no Webcam
Apple is taking their proprietary model too far. They use their own adapters so that they can sell the license to use those adapters to approved 3rd parties. This renders all current thumb drives and peripherals completely useless. Apple broke serious new ground when they stopped supporting floppy drives, but this is ridiculous. With not including a webcam, they are again severely limiting the concept of a media consumption device. Skype and GChat are too popular now, and people will very soon insist on this.
4. Cost
Why do I want to buy a tablet for the same price I can buy a kick-ass laptop? Doesn’t make sense at all. I know of plenty of tablets on the way with a price point at half that of the iPad.
5. Don’t Drink the iKool-Aid
Being President of a design/development company, I get quite a bit of flack because I’m not an Apple fanboy. While I appreciate what they have done for our industry, I do not support their proprietary tactics. It severely limits choice, which is a big part of the usefulness of modern technology. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan of any current operating system, but by sticking to their proprietary ways, you are forced to drink the iKool-Aid or not participate in their world at all. Not cool. There are too many other options out there these days.
